Tap to Pay on iPhone and Collect mode — take money at the door, no card reader

Training subs, match fees and open runs, paid on your iPhone in a tap. And if payments are all you need, Collect mode means you don’t have to put your whole team on the app first.

“I’ll transfer it later.” “Can I give you cash next week?” “Does anyone have change for a twenty?”

Every coach who runs a session has been the club’s cash box. A pocket full of coins, a list on the back of a receipt and no idea at the end of the night who actually paid.

The problem: the door is where money gets lost

Bank transfers work for season fees. But a lot of basketball money changes hands at the door: a £5 open run, a £6 training sub, a match fee from the player who forgot to pay in advance. Most people don’t carry cash any more, and most clubs don’t own a card reader.

What’s new: Tap to Pay on iPhone

Run5 now turns your iPhone into the card reader. The player taps their contactless card, Apple Pay or Google Pay on your phone, and the payment is done.

Collect mode: just the payments

Not every club wants to move their whole team onto a new app on day one. Some just need to take money at the door.

That’s what Collect mode is for. It’s a payments-only way to use Run5. You don’t need to add your roster, and your players don’t need the app. Set up Stripe, open Collect mode and start taking payments.

When you’re ready for the rest (RSVPs, chat, fees, matchday), it’s all in the same app.

What it costs

Tap to Pay and Collect mode are free. There’s no subscription and they aren’t part of Run5 Pro. The player pays the amount you charge, with no surcharge. Run5’s platform fee of 2.4% + 20p per payment (capped at £3.00) comes out of the club’s Stripe payout, the same as card payments in the app. Full detail on Pricing.

How to start

  1. Download Run5. Choose Collect mode if payments are all you need, or set up your full team
  2. Set up Stripe in Payment settings and wait until payouts show as Active
  3. Turn on Tap to Pay from Settings or the + menu and follow Apple’s setup screens
  4. Take your first payment at the door

Good to know: Tap to Pay needs an iPhone XS or later. It’s hidden on iPads and older iPhones. Payments are processed by Stripe and Run5 never stores full card numbers. See Support if you can’t see the option, and Apple Pay and card fees for paying in the app.
